Leigh grows up in Rotterdam, drawn to the water as an escape from an unhappy home and a volatile father. Her fascination with the undersea world leads her into marine biology, where she studies ancient organisms and joins an expedition to a newly discovered trench in the Atlantic Ocean. What she finds there challenges assumptions about the origins of life and draws her toward an ambitious space agency in the Mojave Desert.
